About Prince of Wales College: A Legacy

Both as a highly regarded university in its own right and as one of the founding institutions of the current-day University of Prince Edward Island, Prince of Wales College (PWC) occupies a crucial position in the history of higher education on P.E.I.

The Prince of Wales College: a Legacy site was launched in 2013 with the goal of preserving and promoting this valuable history.

Together, the collections of yearbooks, academic calendars, student newspapers, and images provide a window into the daily operations of the university and of the first-hand experiences of its faculty, staff, and students. Explore the About PWC pages to learn more about different aspects of PWC history.

Project Background
The materials in the digital collections found on this site were digitized at UPEI’s Robertson Library in 2012 and largely came from the Prince of Wales College materials held by the  University Archives and Special Collections Unit.

The site itself was created and launched in 2013 by the Robertson Library, with support and encouragement of the PWC Alumni Association and the University Histories Roundtable.

Prince of Wales College: a Legacy was built using a software platform called Islandora* and continues to be hosted and maintained by the Robertson Library team.

In 2021 and again in 2025, the site was upgraded to be compatible with the latest versions of the Islandora platform, resulting in a significant shift in the look and feel of the site and providing new options for viewing and searching the collections.

* Islandora is an open source digital asset management software, which was originally developed at the Robertson Library in the early 2000s, but is now overseen by a non-profit foundation and used around the world. Visit the Islandora Foundation website for more information.
