College Times

The Prince of Wales College Times began publication in December of 1923. It was the successor to the Prince of Wales Observer, which had ceased publication at least ten years before. A student newspaper, the College Times featured college and alumni news, poetry, sports, humour, gossip, and an advice column. After the newspaper's first year of publication, it changed to a magazine format, expanding its contents to include fiction and essays. As well, the final issue of College Times each year featured the biographies of the graduating students. In 1945, the College Times returned to a newspaper format, continuing to feature the same type of contents. News from other universities began to be printed in the early 1960s. In the late 1960s, with the growth of student activism, the contents of the College Times changed. College news, book reviews, poetry and sports were featured, along with opinionated editorials on student rights, pollution, sexuality, the faults of the educational system and the possibility of amalgamation with Saint Dunstan's University. In the spring term of 1969 the College Times ceased publication. The following year it was succeeded by the Cadre, the newspaper of the University of Prince Edward Island, the result of the amalgamation of Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan's University.
